Should you be concerned about SIP valuation when market corrects
Market corrections can be unsettling, especially for investors who regularly invest through SIPs (Systematic Investment Plans). Many investors panic and consider redeeming their investments when markets fall, fearing further losses. However, history suggests that staying invested has often led to better long-term outcomes.
We conducted a research study to analyze the impact of major market corrections on SIP investments. The objective was to evaluate how a SIP of ?10,000 per month performed during different crisis periods and how its valuation changed at the market bottom, six months later, and one year later.
Understanding the SIP Valuation During Market Correction
We analyzed four significant market downturns:
1. 2008 Global Financial Crisis (March 2009 Bottom)
2. 2013 Taper Tantrum (August 2013 Bottom)
3. COVID-19 Crash (March 2020 Bottom)
4. 2022 Inflation & Interest Rate Hikes (June 2022 Bottom)
For each of these crises, we tracked 2 year SIP returns when the market hit its lowest point, and then observed how the portfolio value changed after six months and one year. Below is the summary of our findings:
SIP Valuation During Market Corrections
Key Takeaways from the Analysis
1. Market corrections are temporary:
The data suggests that while markets experience steep declines, they tend to recover over time. The SIP value at the bottom of a crisis appears concerning, but patience rewards investors who stay invested.
2. Significant recovery occurs within a year:
Even in the worst market downturns, valuations saw strong recoveries within six months to one year. For example, during the COVID-19 crash, a ?10,000 SIP in Sensex that was worth ?1,89,052 (investment amount 240000) at the bottom grew to ?4,72,520 in just one year.
3. MidCap and SmallCap indices experience sharper drawdowns but stronger recoveries:
Investors in Nifty MidCap 100 and Nifty SmallCap 100 witnessed deeper losses at the bottom but saw significantly higher growth in the recovery phase.
4. Reacting to market panic leads to missed opportunities:
Investors who panic and redeem/stop their SIPs during a correction lock in their losses and miss out on the potential upside. For example, during the 2008 crisis, redeeming at the bottom would have resulted in a -29.54% return in Sensex, whereas holding on for one year would have resulted in a positive return of 14.87%.
What Should Investors Do?
While past performance doesn’t guarantee future results, history indicates that staying invested in SIPs through market downturns has been beneficial. Instead of reacting to short-term volatility, focusing on long-term wealth creation can lead to better financial outcomes.
If history is any indication, market corrections provide opportunities rather than reasons to panic. Staying invested during tough times and maintaining discipline in SIPs can potentially lead to significant wealth accumulation in the long run.
Final Thought: Instead of worrying about short-term fluctuations, investors should ask themselves – What will be the value of my investments if I stay invested through this correction? The data above suggests that patience has historically been rewarded.
Are you prepared to trust the power of staying invested?
